"Hot" Yoga Studio
"Hot Yoga allows for deep, safe stretching and promotes detoxification
of the skin, blood and muscles through sweat. The purpose of
practicing yoga in a room heated to 40oC is to maintain
a consistent level of warmth".
The Challenge
The client needed to be able to heat a workout space to 40oC
(104oF) and maintain that temperature consistently
throughout the space during the workout session. Hot air (convection)
systems have great difficulty providing a consistent temperature
at the floor level (where the workout is performed) due to convection
currents. Hot air rises to the ceiling where it is just wasted.
The Solution
SmartRooms' Architectural
Series heaters, mounted in the ceiling, along with the SmartRooms
Comfort Controller (modified
to operate at 40oC) was chosen to provide the required
temperature and consistency. Radiant Heat isn't subject to convection currents and can quite
easily heat a floor to the desired temperature and do so across
the whole space when sized properly. Since the radiant system
was mounted in the ceiling, it did not use valuable floor space
or interfere with the occupants' workout regime. The occupants
could not injure or burn themselves unlike traditional floor-based heating systems.
Additional Benefits
- By using radiant heat, instead of hot air, energy usage is
optimized. There's no wasted heat trapped at the ceiling level.
- Using a programmable controller, the temperature can be preset
for scheduled sessions, then set back for unoccupied time,
thus saving on energy costs.
- Using fast-acting Architectural Series heaters can quickly raise the temperature to the desired temperature. Ideal for scheduled and unscheduled sessions.
